Summertime Happiness

Thinking that hockey season is just a few short weeks from coming to a close is really depressing. Myself, Tina, and all other hockey fans around the world have to wait until September just for our favorite groups of guys get back together for training camp. Then, we have to wait another month for the regular season to officially start. That’s just so far away!

But then again, it’s SUMMER!

So when there isn’t hockey on tv, what is a girl to do? Oh yeah! Get on social media and find things related to hockey!

Like, “How To Be a Hockey Player” for all you summer / beer leaguers out there.

Or, “How The Playoff Beard Came To Be”

Or, there that whole, follow hockey players on social media to see what they’re up to. Because why not live vicariously through them?

Seriously, I wish I was in Matt Duchene’s shoes, hanging out with country singers in my spare time.

But let’s be honest, we’re way more excited for the new NHL season to start, especially when we have no stock in the Stanley Cup Final. Yet, I will be watching every single game, including tonight’s Game 7 between the LA Kings and Chicago Blackhawks.

P.S. – Go Hawks!! (because Patrick Kane is on a whole other level)

So during this all too long wait, players go to training camp. My particular favorites are Andy O’Brien:

And then, there’s Gary Roberts’ group / Biosteel #CAMP

To say the least, I’m excited for #CAMP 2014 and all things related to hockey players training. If it meant I could hang with those guys, then count me in for insane workouts and a strict diet.

As much as I love summer, I love hockey season even more. So I’ll enjoy the last few games before it’s 3-4 month hiatus.

Happy Birthday, Logan!

Not-so-obvious statement of the day: I love Logan Couture.

No one knows this because I don’t tweet about him as often as I like. Usually while he’s playing on the west coast, I’m dead asleep here in Boston. (Don’t forget, I am a college student.)

But that’s my only excuse (and hardly even a valid one). Back to Logan though!

Today is his 25th birthday!!

logan bday cake

He’s now 25, and you’re saying “so what?” I’ll tell you what, every hockey fan needs to have a deep appreciation for Logan, his hockey skills, and personality.

In case you missed it, Logan got some attention for saying his celebrity crush was Selena Gomez.

But what’s even worse, he got overlooked during the 2012 All-Star Game so many times, that he ended up being the last pick in the draft.

The entire time I was staring longingly at the TV, waiting for his name to be called. (Shame on the team captains that year.) At least he took the time to thank me.

So you’re wondering what he was doing at the ASG. Well, he’s actually a great hockey player. And even though I can’t watch as many of the Sharks games as I’d like to, he never fails to find the highlight reel.

His rookie year, Logan was nominated for the Calder Trophy because why not?

Logan’s basically been a stud his entire life. (Thank you Sharks for posting these bad boys.)

Logan also has a great sense of humor. Do yourself a favor and give him a follow on Twitter @Logancouture

I hope you have the best 25th birthday ever, Logan!

The Unfortunate Nickname

Poor Brandon Sutter. You ask  why? Watch this weeks preview of “In the Room”

In the Room: A Peek Inside 2/25/14

Sutter gets THAT nickname because he’s skinny? But as our resident bad boy, James Neal, admits, he doesn’t even know how “Flat Stanley” became the official nickname for him.

If he was so skinny, he probably couldn’t do this:

Definitely making it my mission to make sure “Flat Stanley” doesn’t stick around for much longer.

What We’re Thankful For

Tina and I have a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving season. We go to an awesome college, there’s no lockout this year, and our favorite players have continued to impress us with their good looks and charm throughout these past few months.

Here’s some of our favorites:

But most importantly Tina and I are most thankful for all our loyal readers. Without you guys, this blog would not exist!

Happy Birthday, Gabriel!

Today may just be one of the best days the month of November has to offer (besides Thanksgiving, of course). We’re talking about Colorado Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog’s 21st birthday! Happy Birthday @GabeLandeskog92 ! Your Swedish-ness has made us very happy people these last few years and we are obliged to say thank you for gracing North America with your presence!

Let’s go over the numerous ways that Gabe is perfect.

He follows the “sun’s out, guns out” rule

And more or less loses all his shirts in the summer.

And it’s to the point where teammate Erik Johnson think he should be an underwear model. We completely agree.

A personal favorite of mine is Gabriel’s ability to wear a pair of glasses. It’s one of the hottest things a man can do.

Remember when you thought The Swedish Chef was this guy from Sesame Street?

Ya, we were all wrong.

He can cook in my kitchen whenever he likes.

So thank you Gabe for being you. A Swedish hockey player who forgets to wear a shirt, could also be a Calvin Klein underwear model, and can cook some breakfast. Happy 21st Gabe the Babe!

Mr. 250

On November 22, 2013, Sidney Crosby scored his 250th career goal against the New York Islanders. Only in true Sidney Crosby fashion would it happen to also break the tie and be the game winning goal with 1:16 left in the third period. As if he needed any more interesting facts to add to his already impressive résumé.

Do we really need a reminder of his stellar career? As a bias Penguins fan, the answer is always YES.

Being the #1 overall draft pick in 2005 was just the tip of the iceberg for the kid.

Then (after getting snubbed for the Calder Trophy), Sid went on to become the youngest player (and only teenager) in any league’s history to capture the scoring title, the Art Ross Trophy, at the age of  19. That same year he also won the Hart Trophy for the NHL’s Most Valuable Player and Lester B. Pearson Award for Most Outstanding Player, as voted by his peers. High praise for a guy who had just completed his second professional season.

At the end of the 2006-07 season, Sid was named captain of the Penguins. At the time he was the youngest captain in the league (now second to Gabriel Landeskog by 11 days, but who’s counting). The 2007-08 season produced the first ever Winter Classic, which was the most storybook of them all. Per usual, Sidney made his mark by scoring the game winner in a shootout goal. Here’s the whole shootout:

Despite an amazing 2007-2008 season where the Penguins made it all the way to the Stanley Cup Final to lose to the Detroit Red Wings, they would reach that same summit just a year later. In one of the greatest moments of Pittsburgh Penguins history, the most amazing trophy in all of sports returned to the ‘Burgh. Oh and in case you didn’t think that was awesome enough, Sid the Kid is also the youngest captain to ever raise the Stanley Cup.

I think they're excited

Oh! But it doesn’t end there! Remember the 2010 Vancouver Olympics? Yes, I do too. But let’s be real. Many Americans (me and Tina) secretly cheer for Canada anyways. (Team Canada 2014!!!)

Here’s the infamous “Golden Goal” by none other than Canada’s “Golden Boy”

And do yourself a favor by watching Canadian comedian Shaun Majumder predicted this incredible feat.

Ya’ll already knew this but, Sidney Crosby is awesome. There’s nothing more to say than that. I’d also thought of doing the courtesy of reminding everyone that he’s a mere 26 years old AND a human being. Just in case you ever forgot. You’re welcome.

Happy Birthday, Hallsy!

Oh Taylor Hall. You’ve reached the age of 22 today, you’re old! But not really, we (as in me, because Tina’s for Team Eberle) here at For the Love of Goons are so excited to celebrate another year of you!

He is the cutest first overall draft pick the Oilers have ever had and we can do nothing but appreciate it more and more every day.

If you thought it didn’t get any better, here he is playing with a couple puppies:

Yup, we’re dead too. Thanks Hallsy. Hope you enjoy your 22nd birthday!

Movember Monday

The first week of Movember has officially come to an end and it’s off to quite an impressive start.

The “Movember” initiative is a mustache (mo) growing event during the month of November where participants collect donations that go towards Movembers vision “to have an everlasting impact on men’s health.” Anyone in the world can register on Movember.com and participate. While it’s more about raising awareness about men’s health, the teams are encouraged to start their own competitions and see which member on their team can raise the most money.

Many NHL teams have participated in the last few years by growing mustaches (to whatever extent they can) and raising money.

At the beginning of the month teams kicked off their Movembers by shaving and resorting back to their oh so adorable baby faces.

pretty sure this was Douglas’ first time ever shaving..

With Shawn Thornton as their Captain the Bruins team is currently 14th in the United States (the highest out of all US NHL teams) and have raised more than $16,000

(Go to http://us.movember.com/team/1248385 to donate!)

Players around the league have really started to get their ‘staches growing

It’s hard to tell this early in the month how the players mos will shape up.

But soon enough we’ll find out who are the real men are and who should be leaving facial hair to the big boys.

Guilty Pleasures

Yesterday, some of our favorite NHLer’s killed us with admitting who their celebrity crushes were. Now there’s this!

A personal favorite is Zach Parise openly admitting to watching the “Real Housewives of New Jersey.” Clearly he’s having some separation issues from the Garden State… maybe.

But then there’s Sidney Crosby’s answer of “Duck Dynasty.” He’s probably jealous of their ability to grow a beard and his lack thereof. Don’t worry Sid, with that new iPhone of yours, just download the Duck Dynasty Beard app and you’ll be set.

we know you're frustrated Sid

we’re frustrated too, Sid

Then there’s David Backes. First naming Anna Kendrick as his celeb crush, who Tina couldn’t have been more excited to tell me about since  Anna’s a Mainer like her. Then, he reveals that his guilty pleasure television show once was (or still is) “Glee.” Like, is he about to reveal that he can sing too? I mean just look at that guilty grin on his face!

As Tina believes, Bobby Ryan is doing life right by watching “One Tree Hill” as a guilty pleasure.

yup. we approve.

yup. we approve.

We applaud you Bobby Ryan. Oh, and Parise and Seth Jones admittedly watch “Pretty Little Liars” on occasion. That probably should’ve stayed a secret.
